Learn essential steps to protect your home before severe weather hits the Greater Atlanta area.

Storm season in Georgia can bring devastating winds, hail, and heavy rain. Preparing your roof before severe weather strikes is one of the most important steps you can take to protect your home and family. Whether you're in Atlanta, Alpharetta, Nashville, or Greenville, these preparation steps apply across all of our service areas.

Schedule a Professional Inspection

Before storm season begins, have a certified roofing professional inspect your roof. They'll check for loose or missing shingles, damaged flashing, compromised seals around vents and chimneys, and signs of wear that could lead to leaks during heavy rain.

Clean Your Gutters

Clogged gutters can cause water to back up under your shingles, leading to costly water damage. Clean your gutters thoroughly and ensure downspouts direct water away from your foundation.

Trim Overhanging Branches

Trees with branches hanging over your roof pose a significant risk during high winds. Trim branches back at least 6 feet from your roofline to prevent damage from falling limbs.

Document Your Roof's Condition

Take clear photos and videos of your roof from multiple angles. This documentation will be invaluable if you need to file an insurance claim after storm damage.

Know Your Insurance Policy

Review your homeowner's insurance policy before storm season. Understand your deductible, coverage limits, and the claims process. Capital City Roofing can help you navigate insurance claims if damage occurs.

Emergency Preparedness

Keep a tarp and roofing nails accessible in case of emergency repairs. Have the contact information for a trusted roofing contractor like Capital City Roofing (470-ROOF-ATL) saved in your phone for immediate response.

Practical Steps That Reduce Damage Before the First Storm Hits

Preparation is the least expensive form of roofing maintenance, and the return on a few hours of work before storm season can be measured in thousands of dollars of avoided repairs. Start with trees: limbs that overhang the roof or sit within striking distance of the ridge line should be trimmed back to at least six feet of clearance. Georgia pines are the biggest offenders because their shallow root systems make them prone to toppling in saturated soil, and a single fallen pine can breach the roof deck in multiple locations.

Next, walk the perimeter and look at the edges. Loose or lifted shingles along the eaves and rakes are the first to peel in high winds, and a lifted edge becomes a lever that the wind uses to strip an entire course. A tube of roofing sealant and a few hand-pressed tabs on a calm spring afternoon can prevent a peel-back that exposes underlayment during a fifty-mile-per-hour gust.

Ventilation and Drainage as Storm Defenses

Proper attic ventilation does more than regulate temperature. A balanced intake-exhaust system equalizes pressure between the attic and the exterior during rapid barometric changes that accompany severe thunderstorms. An unventilated or poorly vented attic creates a pressure differential that pushes against the roof deck from below, making shingles more susceptible to uplift. Confirming that soffit intakes are clear and ridge exhaust is unobstructed is a five-minute check with significant storm-resilience benefit.

Gutters and downspouts are your drainage defense. Georgia storms routinely produce two inches of rain in thirty minutes, and a clogged gutter converts that rainfall into a waterfall over the fascia and against the foundation. Clear gutters in March, again after pollen season in May, and once more after fall leaf drop. Capital City Roofing's free 27-point inspection evaluates drainage performance alongside every other roofing component, with findings documented in BuilderLync for your records.
